The Federal and State Governments have established laws to help protect future generations from the effects of our current consumption. In 2007, the Federal government put into place Executive Order 13423 entitled: Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management (http://www.ofee.gov/eo/eo13423_main.asp). In the State of New Jersey, Executive Order #91 was established to address this issue (http://www.state.nj.us/infobank/circular/eof91.htm). New Jersey also inacted Executive Order #76 regarding the use of green cleaning products, http://www.state.nj.us/infobank/circular/eoc76.htm. Organizations should work towards the careful inclusion of environmental law statements and goals in their competitive purchasing process. If the environmental laws are being used to assist the purchasing process, they must be viewed as value-added/cost avoidance mechanisms.
